Lagenaria - a pumpkin with a swan neck

Lagenaria - a pumpkin with a swan neck

Amazingly beautiful lagenaria will decorate your garden plot, and its fruits

Lagenaria (Lagenaria siceraria) is one of the oldest vegetable plants, domesticated, according to some sources, at least 15 thousand years ago. Until now, scientists have not precisely established the areas of origin of these famous pumpkins: Asia, America, New Zealand and Africa - equally may be the first places of their growth.

Nature has come up with many forms of Lagenarii - these are Lagenarii round as balls and long as snakes, Lagenarii in the form of vessels: bottles, flasks, jugs and club-shaped ones, and, finally, the most exotic form - in the form of geese-swans and even speckled ones: with patterned white spots on a green background. In this extravagant form of lagenaria, the fruit grows downward-curving necks that turn into an elegant head. They really look like geese-swans from a fairy tale, familiar to us from childhood. As one eastern legend says: the evil sorcerer imprisoned the little prince and the little princess at the very top of the old castle, but the swan geese saved the children and brought them back home. For this, the sorcerer turned them into pumpkins with goose necks.

When growing such "geese-swans" as if you come into contact with a fairy tale, such a neighborhood is especially pleasant for preschool children who believe in miracles so much. I grow such pumpkins in seedlings and plant them in open ground after the end of the frost. They love well-fertilized soil and abundant watering - in our conditions (in the Central Region) it is better to water with warm water. "Geese-swans" tied by the stalk grow with elongated necks, and those left in a free state - with curved necks. The resulting fruits dry up after ripening and can be painted and varnished. Fruits ripen at normal room temperature, are stored on the floor, and yellowing of the fruit is a sign of ripening. Usually, before the New Year, the entire crop of lagenaria ripens.

It is not necessary to soak the seeds before planting; it is enough to plant them in damp ground. In this case, the temperature of the earth should be at least 25 ° C, otherwise the seeds will be blown out from the inside. Seedlings will soon appear if you keep the pots of planted Lagenaria seeds in a greenhouse on solar heating, under a lamp or next to a steam heater. In addition to decorative properties, speckled "goose" lagenarii are also suitable for food: they are edible in milk age, they are cooked like ordinary zucchini. Slight bitterness of the pulp disappears after hot processing.

These vigorous plants up to 15 m long with rounded velvety leaves, grown without forming in any shape and carrying "swan geese" will create a lyrical atmosphere on your site. I will send the seeds for this. I send gardeners seeds of butternut pumpkin - portioned, nutmeg - the world leader among pumpkins in taste, as well as seeds of Lagenaria Speckled goose with a swan neck, Little Leaf cucumber - varieties of the XXI century with a small leaf, cowpea beans with a pod length of up to 1 m and other rare crops and varieties; seedlings of grapes, apple trees, pears of frost-resistant varieties.

Dishes from Lagenaria. | Country of Masters

Good day. Yesterday I finally got the long-awaited wood burner. And immediately into battle. Here's what we managed to do yesterday evening and today. Well, as the detailed MK promised.

Here they are my last, dried up.

I pour boiling water, right in the sink, in any dish, as convenient.

Cover with a rag and for 10-15 minutes, periodically turning from side to side.

I take it out and begin to scrape off the top layer with a knife.

And then I clean it with an iron sponge.

Here's what I used: a metal file, a burner, a set for wood carving, sandpaper, a round file, a thermal gun, acrylic varnish, papier mache mass.

So on my knees, it's so convenient for me, I saw off part of the pumpkin, having previously drawn a line with a simple pencil.

I scrape the insides with a dessert spoon.

These are the pieces of sandpaper, first large and then smaller, I grind by hand.

With a file, I remove the husk from the narrow part of the pumpkin.

Here are all the insides from the 1st pumpkin.

Align the edges - first like this.

Then, on the contrary, with a pumpkin on sandpaper.

In a small detail, I cut out a recess for the ponytail.

This glass will be on the ponytail. While this is a blank. Gradually, I will show them all.

This is another workpiece, here I cut the tail, left about 5 mm and hot melt in the hole made.

Now I close up the papier mache hole from below.

Bottom view, when the papier mâché dries, primed and painted. Thank you all who will come in handy.

Varieties and varieties

In agricultural shops there is a wide selection of individual seed varieties and a variety of mixtures. Common are:

  • Warty. The skin is completely covered with wart-type tubercles, different colors. They can be pears or balls in shape.
  • Star-shaped. They look like flattened or elongated squash, starfish, crowns. Diameter 10-15 cm.Coloring from yellow to bright orange and green tones
  • Bottled. Refers to lagenarii, marble staining with a green tint. Known as gourd or tableware varieties. Used for crafts - vases, dishes, boxes
  • Mandarin. Due to the pronounced neat ribbing and bright orange coloration, the characteristic rounded shape is similar to oranges and tangerines
  • Chalmoid. In another way, these pumpkins are called mushrooms or turbans. There are tangerine and olive colors
  • Vicolytes. The highlight is in unusual lobed leaves and beautiful variegated fruits with specks or specks.

Decorative pumpkins are of various types. A striking example is the Cobra bottle lagenaria, which has a mace fruit and a spotted color. Or the interesting Cucurbita maxima - a turban-shaped ornamental pumpkin derived from a large-fruited species. Most of the known pumpkins are the result of the selection of small-fruited figured pumpkins.

Reference! Gardeners' favorites are serpentine lagenarii, Kruknek crank.

Guys, today we will get acquainted with the folk craft of Russia "Gorodetskaya Painting".

Gorodets painting is one of the traditional decorative crafts and ranks among the highest achievements of Russian folk art.

You will never confuse with anything the joyful colors of Gorodets painting, its black horses with a crooked leg and a swan neck, its birds with outlandish tails in the form of a butterfly's wing. Horses are always portrayed in profile, and people - only full face. And all this is surrounded by luxurious flower garlands.

Gorodets painting is symbolic. A horse in it is a symbol of wealth, a bird is a symbol of happiness, and flowers are a symbol of health and prosperity in business. The subjects of the old Gorodets painting were horse riders, young ladies in crinolines, weddings, feasts, tea drinking and other solemn scenes from the life of the townspeople.

Guys, tell me what colors are used by Gorodets craftsmen?

Children's answers: red, blue, green, orange and their shades.

Let's look at what elements the Gorodets pattern consists of.

(Show illustrations "Gorodets painting", "Elements of Gorodets painting)

To draw the attention of the children and say the elements: leaves, roses, kupavas, buds, chamomile.

Today I propose you to make a pattern based on the Gorodets painting, we will make the pattern "Rosean" and "Bud" in the strip.

Guys, let's look at the scheme for working on the Gorodets pattern:

Stage 1 of our drawing is called "underpainting", that is, the image of a red circle and three sheets on the sides.

The second stage of our drawing is called "shading", that is, doing half a day in the upper part of the rose and the bud.

Stage 3 of our drawing is called "reviving", that is, making dots and curls with white paint.

You have prepared sheets on your table, let's get down to creative work.

Let's proceed to the first stage: we take the red color and draw an underpainting - a circle in the center of our leaf, complement the composition with leaves on the sides, and also make smaller circles on the sides to depict the bud and also leaves on the sides of the bud.

While our underpainting is drying up, I suggest you take a little rest and do hand exercises:

Meadow of flowers

A tall flower has grown in a clearing,

(Connect the wrists, spread the palms to the sides, round the fingers a little)

In the spring morning he opened the petals.

(Open your fingers like a bud is opening)

All petals beauty and nutrition

(Rhythmically move your fingers together-apart)

Together they give roots underground.

(Put your palms down, press your backs together, spread your fingers)

Fingers for a walk

(Hands are clenched into fists, and thumbs "run" on the table)

(The index fingers "run")

("Go" ring fingers in the wrap-up)

(Touch the table rhythmically with both little fingers, like a bunny jumping)

(Bang your fists on the table)

Now we turn to the second and third stages of the creative drawing: take white and select the half-arcs in the upper part of the rose and the bud, and also select the dots and curls.

Upon completion of the work, the children lay out the work, together they analyze the work.

You are great fellows, today we have become real Gorodets craftsmen!

How to grow lagenaria and make kitchen utensils from it

Lagenaria is an annual plant. Like all pumpkin seeds, lagenaria is a liana. Its lashes reach a length of 10 - 15 m, fruits - up to 2 m with a weight of up to 7 kg. Fruits grow quickly.

Large single flowers of Lagenaria are off-white in color and not very pleasant smell. As if embarrassed by this, the plant blooms late in the evening. Therefore, pollination is better done manually for greater reliability.

For pollination of one ovary, 2 - 3 male flowers are used. To obtain seeds of lagenaria, the first female flower must be thoroughly pollinated, and the fruit must be left on the seeds (so that it has time to ripen).

The fruit left on the seeds in the fall, before frost, is cut from the stalk and stored at room temperature until the end of November. It is by this time that the seeds will ripen. The lignified fruit is sawn with a hacksaw, the seeds are removed from it and stored at room temperature.

Seeds are able to remain viable for 8 years, but it is still better to limit themselves to 6 years of storage. Lagenaria can be grown not only by planting seeds in open ground, but also through seedlings. When growing seedlings, the seeds that have emerged (each separately) are planted in a small flower pot with the sprout down.

It is desirable that the sprouts are not large and do not break off when planting. Seedlings that have reached 25 - 30 cm can be planted in open ground when the threat of frost has finally passed. Like all vines, it is better to grow lagenaria on trellises or settle near the fence.

The plant feels good under trees and on dung heaps.

The main thing is to be warm and damp. Lagenaria is grown using the same agricultural techniques that are needed for cucumbers and zucchini.

The most beautiful garden figurines are made from natural materials and are easy to make. Some of the figurines can be made with children, leaving them pleasant and sweet memories for a lifetime.

Others require a certain level of skill and special skills. But, if you like figurines that are difficult to make, you have a powerful incentive to learn a new craft for yourself.

And to please not only your loved ones, but also to make garden figurines as a gift for friends and acquaintances.

The table gourd, or lagenaria (Lagenaria siceraria), bears fruit of a wonderful shape. The bark of a mature Lagenaria fruit contains stony cells and lignes, becoming extremely durable and waterproof.

From the fruits of lagenaria, egg capsules of the most diverse shapes can be made.

I never have a large collection of egg-pods at home. I give my crafts to my friends, whom they bring pleasure. I want this joy and benefit to return to our homes in the form of a half-forgotten decorative pumpkin!

The fruit of the lagenaria, fully ripe and peeled, is ready for making a capsule. For those interested in this technology, I will tell you in detail how to make beautiful and useful products from a decorative pumpkin - a cup, a jug, a salad bowl and a lampshade.

Decorating the fruit of lagenaria by burning

Burning is the most harmonious way to decorate the surface of a pot pumpkin. For those who undertake this business for the first time, I advise you to first practice on a regular wooden surface. And it will be a shame if you suddenly spoil the beautiful pumpkin-egg capsule ...

Burning on a clean surface of the capsule gives it an amazing shine and charm. I use a regular school burner, having previously selected a drawing.

If you are not very good at drawing, then start with a simple ornament.

You can sketch your favorite ornament, and then transfer it to the surface of the pumpkin using a stencil. Apply the pattern to the entire surface of the egg capsule, and then mark its main parts with a burner. Drive the burner smoothly without stopping in one place! Otherwise, you can burn a hole in the thin surface of the pumpkin.

At the end of the work, wash the decorated surface of the pumpkin with warm water and soap and wipe it dry with a cloth. Feel free to use your jug - pour water, milk, kvass into it.

Do not varnish the pattern on the bark of the Lagenaria fruit.

The walls of the pumpkin-capsule breathe and have membrane conductivity (therefore, the liquid in the capsule remains cold and fresh for a long time). They say that the water stored in the pumpkin-egg capsule acquires medicinal properties.

And now let's move on directly to the manufacture of various products from the fruits of Lagenaria, guided by the drawings.

Making a goblet from lagenaria

Take a pear-shaped egg capsule that has been cleaned beforehand. Next: - Cut with a jigsaw (see Fig. 1) along the surface "A" detail 1. Sand the edges. Clean the inside of the part with a knife or spoon. - Cut part 2 with a jigsaw around the circumference "B". Grind the edges and clean the inner surface. - Make a hole in part 2 with an awl or screwdriver; it should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the stalk 4. - Burn a pattern on both parts of the goblet. - Connect both parts (as shown in Fig. 3) using the Moment glue. - If you have small round balls - "apples" (such miniature pumpkins sometimes appear on the liana rice 2), then you can collect the goblet with the "apple", as in rice. four.

Making a jug from lagenaria

The first option, with a rope handle: - Take a previously cleaned egg capsule, cut off a part of the vessel along the circle "A" (Fig. 1). Sand the edges. - Select seeds from the pod, apply the pattern by burning. - Make two holes with an awl and thread the rope handle through them. The second option, with a handle and a lid (Fig. 3): - The initial part of making a jug coincides with the first option. - Use the curved barrel of a bottle gourd as a handle - Use glue to attach the handle to the jug.

Making a salad bowl from lagenaria

Take a pear-shaped egg pod. Use a jigsaw to cut off a portion of the fruit along line "A" (fig. 1). Scrape the edges, select the seeds and clean the inside and outside of the pumpkin. - Apply the pattern by burning. - Cut off the curved part of the gourd (detail 1, fig. 3) - this will be the handle for the salad bowl. - Glue the handle to the salad bowl (fig. 2). To increase the bonding area, insert a plug inside (detail 1, Fig. 2).

Making a lampshade from Lagenaria

Take a pear-shaped egg capsule that has been cleaned beforehand. Cut off a part of the fruit with a jigsaw along the circle "A" (Fig. 1). Strip the edges of the fruit. - Select seeds and clean the inside of the product. - Make several holes around the circumference of the capsule to remove heat from the lampshade (fig. 1) and one hole in the base with a diameter of 5-7 mm. - Apply the pattern to the surface of the product by burning. - Use the details from the old lamp, now it only remains to fix the egg-shaped lampshade. - Assemble the luminaire (see fig. 2). Fasteners: rope (1), stick (2), socket (3), electric lamp (4), wire (5). Use the reed barrel (6) so that the fixture of the lamp is not visible.

These and many other beautiful and useful products can be made from decorative pumpkins. Imagine, practice, and you will succeed!

Making males and females from lagenaria

We will show you how to make garden figures of funny chickens and hedgehogs yourself. For chickens, we need: pumpkin, acrylic paints, polymer clay, hot glue, matte varnish.

First, the pumpkins need to be washed well and covered with a base coat of paint. For good coverage, you need 2-3 layers.

If you don't have pumpkins, you can make plaster of paris templates for garden figures.

We draw with a pencil the outlines of our future pattern.

We consistently color our figures. It is interesting when garden figures are made in the same style, but in different colors. Let's add some dot painting to the lines of our main drawing.

We form a chicken head from polymer clay. Instead of polymer clay, you can use salted dough or gypsum. We fix our parts with hot glue to the figure.

In order for our figures to have a keen eye with a point of black paint, draw an eye and add a point of white paint to it. To fix the painting, garden figures with a layer of matte varnish.

The funny garden figures are ready.
