5 tips to help you make a quality garden layout for the next year

5 tips to help you make a quality garden layout for the next year

If you want the site to delight you with its beauty for the next season, plan it in advance. This will save you money by buying only what you really need.

Choose the right place for your new flower bed

The appearance of the entire site depends on the correct placement of flower beds. When choosing a place for a flower bed, you need to take into account various factors. First of all, it is the microclimate. You need to know exactly the characteristics of your garden in several ways:

  • Illumination. If you are going to plant crops that require a lot of sun, choose the most suitable location for this, which will remain lit most of the day. For evergreens, unpretentious to the degree of illumination, can be planted on the north side of buildings. Perennials can also be placed here, which can come out of hibernation ahead of time. On the north side, they won't be sunburned by the harsh winter sun.
  • Soil characteristics. Different colors require different types of soil. For flowers with coarse and large roots, a clay-sod land is required. Provide ornamental shrubs with a mixture of clay soil with sand and peat. For plants with weak and small roots, leafy soil and humus are needed. Dried flowers and gypsophila - land with a high content of sand and peat. Some perennial crops (peonies) require the addition of coarse gravel to the soil to improve water permeability.
  • Soil moisture. This indicator is influenced by various factors. Wetter soil is found in places where groundwater comes close to the surface. Also, near roof drains and near trees, the earth is moistened (but not near the trunks, but under the ends of branches). If you will not be able to water the flowers regularly due to frequent departures, it is better to choose one of these places so that it will be easier for the flowers to wait out the time until the next watering. On the contrary, it is better not to plant plants that do not like to drink a lot in such areas.
  • Warmly. When planning the site, remember that the plants will have to overwinter. The microclimate at different points in the garden may depend on where the ventilation windows, gas boiler pipes, and outbuildings are located. It can be warmer in these places due to the release of warm air. This knowledge will come in handy when planning the location of wintering plants.

Buzulnik, astilba, hosta, ferns, rogers are suitable for wet shade. Plants for dry sunny places: sedum, narrow-leaved lavender, sage, catnip. Plants for acidic soils - rhododendron, azalea, heather.

When choosing a place for a flower bed, take into account its visibility from different points intended for recreation - from the side of the entrance to the garden, the porch of the house, the barbecue area, etc. In this case, the flower bed will more often delight you with its colors.

Sketch the plan of the garden

A plan will help to represent the general view of the garden. First, make a list of what you would like to see on your site - flower beds, an alpine slide, a mini-pool, rockery, an area with fruit trees and berry bushes, a recreation area, etc. Carefully calculate all the necessary measurements, because it is not always possible to fit everything you want. And then transfer the objects to the scaled site map. It may turn out that some objects will have to be abandoned in favor of others. Do not forget to mark on the path plan. Think over them so that they go the most convenient paths to key areas, otherwise you yourself will then "cut off" the road in order to quickly get to the right place. Set aside a place for household needs. If you are planning to grow fruit crops, compost will come in handy. On the far side of the site, plan a pit for this.

Determine the type of your flower garden

In addition to classic flower beds, there are other types of flower beds: borders, ridges, islands, modules, parterres. If you need to frame a lawn, a recreation area, a pond, use mixborders. Another type of flower beds is landscape. It repeats the appearance of plantings growing in the wild. Unpretentious crops that survive well in natural conditions are suitable for such an imitation. Make sure that the planting style does not stand out from the general style of the garden plot. If you are setting up a flower garden near a Victorian gazebo, then fill the planting with suitable plants - lilies, daylilies, nasturtiums.

It is possible to use different stylistically designed flower beds on one site, but then the site will have to be divided into different zones according to styles.

You shouldn't buy whatever you like

When creating a garden, I want to collect everything that is most interesting, bright, unusual in it. But it is better to be guided not by emotions, but by practical considerations. Exotic flowers look impressive, but they will also cause a lot of hassle, if they take root at all. After all, the seeds and seedlings of such plants are usually brought from regions with a suitable climate for them or grown in greenhouse conditions. If the summer is not very warm, they will require too much attention. It is better to take less whimsical plants for the base of the flower garden. They will better tolerate climatic "surprises", and at the same time will become a wind protection for other flowers.

Give preference to perennials

Annual plants conquer with their variety of flowers, but the basis for a flower garden is perennial crops. If you correctly plan a flower bed of perennials alone, then it will bloom continuously all summer. At the same time, you will not need to worry about the timing of planting the elements of the flower group. The only thing that is required is to remove the stems and leaves of faded specimens in time. Perennial crops, entering into a common floral symphony one after another, can be used to compose bouquets throughout the season. But most annuals begin to delight with their variegation only closer to the middle of the summer period.

How to make high beds? An easy way to improve the look of your garden and your garden yield

Do-it-yourself high beds in the country are a new "trend" of recent years. It is convenient, beautiful and effective, according to summer residents. True, in order to come to such a modern look of your own garden, you will have to work a little. Interfax.by tells how to properly organize such beds, especially since this can be done in early April.

5 the advantages of a high bed over a conventional one

- she always looks neat

- it can be used on any soil, even poorly suitable for agriculture - swampy or stony areas

- it is practical and comfortable, it is easy to approach it from any side

- due to the method of creation, they are more fertilized, and warmer, which is why the harvest ripens faster on them

- on a high bed, you can embody various design solutions - make it of any shape and height.

The creation of a high bed can be done both in spring and autumn. The latter option is even preferable, as it helps to thoroughly approach this issue. But it is not too late to do this in spring, especially at the beginning of April. Just be prepared for the fact that the earth needs to be given the opportunity to overheat for several days after you build the ridge itself. It is not recommended to plant plants in a newly made garden bed.

What to make a high bed from?

The classic version of a high warm bed is a bed of wooden planks connected in the form of a rectangle or triangle. Structures that look like a children's sandbox are covered with mulch and organic fertilizers.

However, some summer residents go further than the classics and make similar beds from any kind of materials: concrete (it is more durable than wood, although not so environmentally friendly), brick, plastic slate and even plastic bottles.

If you choose an environmentally friendly wood option, do not forget to treat the boards and bars with a special impregnation or antiseptic to prevent wood from rotting.

What should be the size of the tall bed?

Absolutely anyone. First of all, this size should be convenient for you - so that you can approach the ridge from any side and work on it.

However, the numbers 300 cm x 180 cm and a height of 40 cm are considered classic for a standard rectangular high warm bed.

Where should the site be located?

Considering that the bed will be filled manually, it does not matter where it will be located on the site. The only condition is that the place should not be completely shaded so that the plants have enough sunlight.

How to fill a high bed?

Having built a high structure from scrap materials, you can start filling a high bed. Drainage is laid out at its bottom - it can be fallen leaves, small branches, wood shavings, tree bark. The next layer is organic fertilizer, best of all is rotted manure. It is he who will create the warm layer.

After organics, a drainage layer is again needed, similar to the lower layer. The fourth layer is again organic fertilizers. This time they can be mixed with any complex mineral fertilizers. The topmost layer of the high bed will be fertile soil. The minimum thickness of such soil should be 10 cm.

By the way, you will also have to think about the aisles - about what will happen between the beds you have built. This space can be arranged in the form of an ordinary lawn - just remember to mow it from time to time - or cover it with tiles, sawdust, roofing felt or sand.

What to grow in a high garden bed?

Active summer residents grow absolutely everything in high beds - from nightshades to flowers and herbs. The most convenient type of beds is considered for greenery, as well as strawberries and strawberries - crops that usually require a lot of space on the site.

We make out the entrance to the garden

To accentuate the entrance to the garden, try installing a simple arch made of poles. Such a deliberately rough design looks especially impressive in combination with climbing roses.

You can try to weave an arch from a willow vine. If you use live rods, the support will turn green pretty quickly and turn into a charming tunnel. A wooden door installed at the entrance will turn the vegetable garden into a real room in the open air.

This solution is inexpensive - you can use any unnecessary product, having previously cleaned and refreshed it with a new layer of paint.

OUR ADVICE

include in the design of the garden the hemp remaining from the cut trees. Framed by nasturtium, petunia or other climbing plants, they will create the necessary vertical accents and become a real decoration of the site.

Layout of tracks at the summer cottage

Convenient paved paths help to easily get into any area of the site, even in rainy weather, and keep the house clean. The plot with beautiful paths looks attractive and respectable.

Paving paths is expensive. It is necessary to seriously think over the plan of the tracks in advance, so that later you will not experience disappointment from inconveniently laid routes.

When drawing up a plan of paths on a site, be guided first of all by the convenience of movement. The trolley must pass freely along the path and the path must be as short as possible.

On the other hand, in accordance with the rules of garden design, the paths should correspond to the style of the site: if a regular style is chosen for the site, it is better to make the paths straight. If there is a landscape style in the design of the garden, then the paths should be made in the same style: be winding. Alternatively, the main path can be made straight, and the secondary paths curved.

The main routes of movement on the site are often routes:

  • from the entrance to the site to the house
  • from the car park or garage to the house
  • from house to garden
  • from the garden to the well
  • from vegetable garden to compost heap
  • from house to barn
  • from home to a gazebo or recreation area.

It is enough to mark these routes on the plan with arrows in order to visualize all possible movements.

Necessary routes of movement around the site.

The main entrance path from the gate to the house is made the most beautiful. As a material, you can use paving slabs or natural stone here. It can have a nice curving shape and should be wide enough.

The paths that have an economic purpose - leading from the garden to a well or compost, are best arranged in a straight line, with a durable simple surface: asphalt, concrete or with artificial stone. The width of such paths should be sufficient for the passage of the garden cart: from 40 cm to 1 m.

Walking paths leading from the house to a gazebo or recreation area can be curved. They can be made of wood, mosaic tiles. They can be covered with pebbles or tree bark.

Paved paths

The garden can be designed using paved paths. To create them, first on the ground, you need to plan easy approaches to the required objects and make a markup.

It is better if the paths are laid along a straight path, so the practicality of using the main area of the land will remain.

Pegs must be driven in along the edges of the future path. Remove soil ten centimeters deep using a bayonet shovel. Cover the depression with sand and tamp.

The surface can be laid out:

  • tree cuts
  • sidewalk tiles
  • medium gravel
  • artificial or natural stone.

At the end of the work, cover the surface with pitch again, filling all the voids.

Personal experience: How a designer made a "relaxation garden" out of her garden

As practice shows, feng shui ideas in the garden give a good result: the space turns out to be psychologically correct, everything looks “in its place”.

► I was looking for a place for the ponds for a very long time: in the water zone (north) there was a parking lot for a car - it was absolutely impossible to make a reservoir there. And feng shui water is a rather important area responsible for business. Therefore, the "water" in the area of the camp was interpreted as blue plants - lobelia and phlox.

And the reservoirs turned out in other places. One - with a composition of ball thujas Danica and wormwood - in the northeast, as a recharge of the tree sign.

In the west, "white metal" is yarrow, falaris, willows Hakuro Nishiki (pictured).

In general, the garden was built as much as possible both in terms of functionality and feng shui.

One side of the embankment is covered with pine bark removed in large layers from fallen trees. These layers are fixed in the hill with giant nails - the past hurricanes and downpours have shown the durability of the structure. Feather grass is planted on the second side of the hill.

There are a pair of sun loungers and a metal table in front of the hearth. To find the point where exactly to put the hearth, we tried for a long time with the help of our old barbecue - we transferred it to different places within the fire zone and imagined that we were sitting here. We tried to feel and analyze where it is better, until we found the very place.

# 2: secluded shop
Despite the fact that the site is not very large, a suitable place was found. This shady corner is separated from the lawn by a circular planting of the very shrubs that are responsible for the fire sign.

We bought an untreated wooden bench, painted it in two colors (white and light gray) with Pinotex glaze, which promises 12 years of wood preservation. A mock-orange bush was planted nearby - when it blooms, it is especially pleasant to sit on the bench.

# 5: swing in the gazebo
Another position was unexpectedly realized this summer, although it seemed to me that it would not go further than an abstract idea, at least this year.On the one hand, according to Feng Shui, in the northeast, in the zone of knowledge and wisdom, a gazebo stood up well. On the other hand, in the landscape project that I did last fall, an unusual swing made of wood was laid. I wanted to combine.

This was just the case when it was right to practice on yourself. In general, I made up my mind.

First, I marked the place of the future structure: size and location. And in the earliest spring, when the snowfalls had not yet begun (sounds absurd, but you remember what those winter and spring were like), I planted plants along the contour of the future structure. Now there are thujas, spruces and hydrangeas, including petioles, mixed with yarrow, forest geranium and sage. Here I put another white-painted bench.

The structure was assembled from larch, the seat was made from a “trial” pine bench with slight reinforcements. The workers assembled the U-shaped racks, treated the part that went into the ground with waterproofing, then installed the crossbeams.

The mount was made of rope, the ends of which are attached at the corners of the contour. In general, I am happy with the result, but some things were unexpected. So, I really like the rope fastening: it does not creak, the swing movement is very soft, but after the first few rains, the ropes stretch, they need to be tied up.

Of course, to make such a garden for relaxation, I had to work quite hard, but the result is worth it. And if we compare a garden with a boat, it feels like we have moved from an oar boat to a sailing yacht.

A beautiful garden for every taste.

As an alternative to a regular vegetable garden, you can plant your own vegetable garden in the same way as you would plant flowers - in beautiful rounded shapes next to a gazebo or seating area.

The most beautiful thing in any garden is the plants themselves. Healthy, fresh, aromatic. If you are planting a vegetable garden as a decorative flower bed, make sure that it does not gape with bare voids after harvesting early vegetables and herbs.

If the garden is small, then you can spend money on beautiful fences for high beds.

Combining vegetables with ornamental plants, you will be surprised at how unexpectedly exquisite look the leaves and fruits of vegetable crops are.

A beautiful vegetable garden, just like flowers, can be grown in a container and decorate the terrace with them.

You can join the ranks of the owners of beautiful gardens, even if you do not have a summer cottage. Perhaps, root crops such as carrots are not practical to grow on the balcony, but everyone can grow greens and special potted varieties of tomatoes and peppers.

It is not necessary to experiment with the design of the garden for the entire plot - try making this year a small kitchen garden near the house in the form of a flower bed. One of your practical steps will give you more information and conclusions than 100 photos of beautiful gardens.

A beautiful vegetable garden is not empty fun. It still brings healthy vitamins, energizes your health and helps you save on food. Your vegetable garden can become the subject of your special pride if it has its own unique design and modern practicality. But, this is your garden, and you decide how much you are willing to work in the determination to make it beautiful, as in these photos.

Any labor expended on the garden will undoubtedly pay off with a good harvest. But there is more desire to take care of a beautiful garden, do you agree?
