6 useful ways to use nettle at their summer cottage
Nettle has unique healing properties due to the high content of a number of vitamins (A, C, K, B1, B2, B3) and all kinds of trace elements (Ca, Mg, Fe). Due to this composition, the plant is actively used when growing in areas of garden and vegetable garden crops.
This herbaceous crop is ideal for mulching due to its ease of use. Mulch is a light, loose layer of crushed stems and leaves. Its thickness can vary from 10 to 20 cm, helping the roots of plants to fully saturate with nutrients, protecting the topsoil from overheating and retaining moisture in it for a long time. tuberization of potatoes. Flower cultures like it, in particular, lilies.
As a siderat
Considering that nettle contains a huge amount of nitrogen, it is ideal for use as a green manure. Special cultivation and preparation of suitable plants takes a lot of time and effort, and capricious and "angry" nettles can help out here.
Of course, it should also be cut or mowed in advance, and after harvesting, spread over the soil in a thick layer and sprinkle it with peat or soil on top.
Such annual manipulations, coupled with the use of "nettle" mulching, contribute to the enrichment of the soil and supply its structure with the necessary plant organic matter. Plus, the nettle layer helps to avoid another problem - solar soil erosion.
Compost with nettle is the fastest and most effective way to improve soil fertility in your garden or vegetable garden. For preparation, take any container (deep saucepan or glass jar), fill with chopped grass mixed with soil, fill with water to the very top (better warm, then the process will start faster) and closed with a lid. To increase the intensity of fermentation, some gardeners add yeast, slices of bread or biofertilizer "Baikal-EM".
The contents of the container are infused for about 7-10 days in a warm place, from time to time it is thoroughly mixed, thereby providing an outlet for accumulating gases.
Be prepared for the fact that the liquid will gradually darken and acquire not the most pleasant characteristic smell. To quench it a little, you can add valerian root to the composition. Among the permissible other useful additives are burdock, comfrey, wormwood, chamomile, wheatgrass, yarrow. These plants combine well with each other and saturate the entire fermented mass with additional vitamins. Finally, the compost is ready when no foam forms on the surface. You should not abuse this fertilizer. It is enough to water the beds 2-3 times a month.
Nettle is an excellent natural fertilizer that serves as an alternative to existing "chemistry" from the store. Containing a whole complex of trace elements, it stimulates plant growth and actively strengthens their immunity.
You can prepare a concentrated nettle infusion. We put the crushed mass into the tank, fill it with boiling water and close it tightly. We set to ferment for 2 weeks, remembering to stir vigorously every day.
The resulting infusion contains a lot of useful substances and is enriched with enzymes. Such feeding will be grateful to most of the most diverse types of garden and vegetable garden crops. The only exceptions are representatives of legumes, as well as garlic and onions.
Addition to the well
Nettle is also suitable as a highly effective "additive" when planting. It simultaneously nourishes the seedlings and repels potential pests. It is advised to lay nettle leaves in the holes just before planting. Seedlings planted on top of a layer of grass receive a powerful growth stimulator. By the way, you can additionally add nettle compost.
Ash from burnt nettle (characteristic blue hue) contains a large amount of potassium. It is worth noting that to obtain this type of feeding, it is necessary to burn dry nettle. By the way, "wood" ash, which is more widely used as a potassium fertilizer, contains only 14-15% potassium. Nettle contains about 40% of this substance.
10 ways to use baking soda in your garden
Adding an article to a new collection
Regular baking soda is not only used for washing dishes and whitening teeth, but also in baked goods and for heartburn. The powder is effective against plant diseases, fights weeds and serves as a fertilizer. The substance is harmless to plants, does not harm beneficial insects and improves the quality of the crop. And that is not all!
Please note: when preparing any soda solutions, do not use metal containers and do not heat the liquid above 55 ° C. Otherwise, soda will lose its beneficial properties.
The benefits and harms of salt for the garden
For many years, opponents of chemical preparations have successfully used table salt to fight diseases, pests and weeds, to feed plants and improve the taste of fruits. But it is often forgotten that this substance in high concentration can harm the soil. The soil is depleted over time, it starts to pass water poorly, its acidity increases. As a result, the plants begin to suffer from chlorosis, and the beneficial microflora dies. But there is a way out! Just add 2-3 buckets of compost per square meter in the fall in the places where the soil was treated with salt, and you will restore the lost balance.
Now let's look at how you can use salt in the country.
How to cook and use nettle infusion in the garden
To feed your garden with nettles, you need to prepare an infusion from it, or rather, a fermented plant mass. There are several ways to do this at once, so we will focus on the most classic one, which can be modified as needed (for example, by adding additional ingredients that enhance the fertilization effect).
Step 1... Chop shoots and leaves of young nettle and pour into a plastic or wooden container for about 2/3 of its volume. Next, fill the container to the top with warm water, leaving a little space for the fermentation of the green mass, and close the lid.
Step 2... Leave the container in a warm place for 7-14 days, opening and stirring occasionally. To speed up the reaction, you can put the container in the bright sun, and also add a little yeast or the Baikal liquid fertilizer to the infusion.
Step 3... In the future, when the liquid in the container darkens and stops foaming, add 10 liters of water to 1 liter of strained infusion.
Garden plants are watered at the rate of 0.5-1 liters of infusion diluted with water for each bush. Root feeding of any crops is carried out 1-2 times a week on cloudy days, after rain or during watering.
As useful additives in such a green fertilizer from nettle, you can add burdock, comfrey, wormwood, chamomile, coltsfoot, yarrow, wheatgrass. These plants complement each other well and create a real multivitamin supplement containing all the elements necessary for garden crops. From non-plant additives, we can safely recommend the addition of ash (1 glass per 10 liters of infusion) and bread (it brings yeast into the infusion).
The only drawback of this popular fertilizer, alas, is its strong unpleasant odor. To get rid of it, some gardeners advise adding valerian root to the infusion of nettle.
Do not abuse organic nettle fertilizer. It is advisable to water the beds with nettle infusion no more than once every two weeks.
You can also apply foliar dressing (spraying on the leaves). To do this, filter the concentrated nettle infusion, dilute with water 1:20 and spray the plants. Foliar dressing is carried out, as a rule, once a month.
Also, in the infusion of nettle, you can soak seeds, tubers, bulbs and cuttings before planting, because young nettle is an excellent root formation stimulant.
In floriculture, nettle is also useful - spraying it with infusion is used to prevent powdery mildew and fight aphids. For such an application, 500-700 g of fresh or 200 g of dry chopped nettle is infused for a day in 5 liters of cold water.
Ways to use Borofoska
The standard version of Borofoska does not contain nitrogen, but there are varieties of the product where this element is present. The nitrogen-containing mixture is not used before winter, when sap flow slows down in crops. Depositing funds can provoke a resumption of growth. In other cases, the use of Borofoska as a fertilizer in the garden in autumn is quite acceptable, the drug will prepare the soil for the next season. For fruit trees and berry bushes, this measure is necessary, since the product will protect the root system from spring temperature extremes.
Borofoska is introduced while digging the soil, the granules are embedded about 10 cm into the topsoil
At the end of the growing season, the time of using the complex does not matter. In the spring, it is not advisable to add the substance immediately after the snow melts. The optimal time for feeding is the period of growing green mass or the beginning of budding. For fruit crops, Borofosk is necessary at the moment when the ovaries are formed. They use only root dressing, you can combine the process with watering or make a working solution.
Consumption rates of Borofoski according to the instructions for the preparation (per 1m 2):
- during digging - 60 g
- for vegetables and legumes - 70 g
- for flowering plants - 100 g.
Shrubs and trees are fertilized with Borofoski solution, prepared at the rate of 5 tbsp. l. dry matter per 25 liters of water.
