Climbing roses

Climbing roses occupy one of the leading places in vertical gardening, they are distinguished by long shoots that need support. They go well with small architectural forms, suitable for the design of arches, decorative columns, pyramids, obelisks, pergolas and other complex structures.

With the help of climbing climbing roses, it is easy to hide garden structures that do not fit into the composition, tree trunks, to create a hedge. All this is beautifully hidden under dense foliage and is decorated with unsurpassed climbing rose flowers. It should be borne in mind that, in the first year after planting, climbing roses do not bloom.

Based on the international classification, climbing climbing roses are divided into six groups: Multiflora, Vishuriana, Lambert, Cordes, Banks and large-flowered, or Climings.

By the nature of growth, climbing roses can be divided into three groups: climbing - from 5 to 15 m in height, climbing - from 3 to 5 m and semi-climbing - from 1.5 to 3 m.The division of climbing roses into subgroups is based on the fact that ramblers bloom on the shoots of past years, and klimings - on the shoots of the current year. It is this difference that determines the approach to cultivation, on which the decorativeness of plants depends.

The formation of shoots in climbing roses is continuous, due to which the phases of flowering and budding are very extended. The total flowering time is from 30 to 170 days. Among the multi-flowering roses, a group of large-flowered, or Climings, stands out for decorativeness.

Climbing rose pruning

With timely pruning, the plant becomes powerful. In addition, due to this procedure, you can embody any design ideas and give the bushes a unique image.

With proper care, good growth of young shoots can be achieved in the first year after planting.

Almost all varieties of climbing roses need shelter for the winter. As soon as the threat of spring frosts has passed, you should open the bushes, cut off the dead or frozen part of the plant.

The longest part of the shoots should be spread out on the surface of the ground, which will make it possible to consider the replacement shoots. Tying the bush to the supports is possible only after the length of the shoots reaches 70-75 cm.

Old shoots are replaced by several fresh ones. As a rule, a small part (2-3 pcs.) Of annual branches and about 4-5 biennial branches are removed.

In cases where the rose pleases with its flowering several times in one season, the flowering shoots should be left for several years. They begin to weaken only at the 5th year of life.

Important! It is recommended to inspect vegetative shoots during pruning because flowering tends to focus on last year's stems. Young shoots are harvested to avoid thickening of the bush

Pruning different groups of climbing roses

Shrubs that bloom on last year's shoots are called "ramblers". Again, such shoots do not bloom, and their presence only reduces the number of buds. This group of climbing roses needs to be cut to the very base of last year's shoots. They will be replaced by new ones that will bloom next year.

Re-blooming climbing roses (grandiflora, claiming, floribunda) form shoots up to 5 m long, on which lateral shoots with buds appear. They will bloom for 3-4 years. By the 5th year of their life, the number of flowers is greatly reduced.

The main whips of such climbing roses are cut out only after 4 years of flowering. The varieties of these roses should have 3-6 main shoots and 2-3 annuals. Pruning climbing roses in the fall can be replaced by pruning stems in spring.
