Choosing a plant for the home

Choosing a plant for the home

Plants appear in the house for various reasons - as a birthday present, an occasional purchase, or out of a desire to make your home beautiful. Or suddenly the craving for floriculture woke up.

However, there is a significant "but". You have no experience, where to start - you have no idea. It was your mother, grandmother and other relatives' brooms that bloomed, because they had a "light hand", and you are afraid that suddenly it will not work out, or you will not be able to find a common language with flowers.

It is difficult for a novice florist to navigate the art of floristry and to comprehend all the wisdom of such a fascinating business as floriculture. But in this article you will find information about buying flowers and placing them in the house, about the rules of care, transplanting, watering and feeding, and about other things a florist needs.

How to start choosing a plant for your home
Let's take it for granted that you don't have flowers and are going to buy them. But what are the reasons for choosing flowers?

First, assess the availability of free time that you can spend on caring for the plant. After all, caring for it is not limited to abundant watering, the plant also needs much more. Including just a good attitude. And do not be surprised - the flower is alive, so you can talk to it, which is what most flower growers do. It will not hurt you either, because the flower grows and blooms better from a good attitude and affectionate treatment.

Among plants, there is also a division into "castes" - aristocrats and commoners, whims and stoics. Aristocrats require much more attention, because they are very capricious, as they should.

So if you are a beginner florist, you should not start your "activity" with an azalea, orchid, gardenia or streptocarpus. A more unpretentious Tradescantia, begonia, guzmania or chlorophytum will do. Moreover, chlorophytum plays not only the role of decoration, but also the role of a filter from harmful substances and can clean the air even from bacteria. In addition, he, not referring to succulents - plants that retain moisture in their stems and leaves, that is, cacti, fat women, epiphyllum, nolin, is also in some way a camel plant.

Chlorophytum - indoor fern - is so unpretentious that it can withstand drought and, in general, extreme "flower" conditions. So its unpretentiousness and useful properties make this plant a desirable "tenant" in every home. And for a novice florist, chlorophytum is an excellent choice.

What kind of lighting is required
Many novice flower growers believe that all plants love the sun and it cannot harm them. Maybe even burns. Our houseplants often came to us "from overseas", where they grew in the jungle. And what kind of sun is there? Solid shadow. So most of them grew up in dense shade.

Indoor plants are conventionally divided into three groups:

  • light-loving plants
  • shade-loving plants
  • shade-tolerant plants

This division is to some extent arbitrary, and the same plant requires a different amount of illumination, depending on what period of growth it is in. But even conventional division will help determine which plant is right for your home.

Group one - light-loving plants:

  • cacti
  • cyperus
  • laurel
  • passionflower
  • bougainvelia
  • bromeliad family
  • arec family
  • succulents - aloe, euphorbia, agave, haworthia, gasteria, stapelia
  • herbaceous plants
  • blooming plants

Remember! The love of light does not imply direct sunlight. They can not only burn the plant, but also destroy it.

Group two - shade-loving plants:

  • tradescantia
  • clivia
  • fatsia
  • coniferous plants

It should be remembered that shade-loving plants still prefer partial shade, not shade.

Group three - shade-tolerant plants:

  • ficus
  • monstera
  • dracaena
  • asparagus
  • ivy
  • begonia
  • aralia
  • amaranth family

Of course, the list of plants is not limited to this. And remember that the division into groups is only conditional. So when choosing a place for plants, you should stop at the windows located from the east or west as a universal option. When you have assessed your options for the timing and placement of plants, go to the store. And choose flowers for yourself based on your preferences and at the call of your soul.

Gardening in The Sims 4

Gardening in The Sims 4 is not only fun and enjoyable, but also a great tool for your Sims to cook and make money from selling crops. A huge variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers will diversify the game process, and collecting exotic plants turns into a real quest! Today we are going to tell you about all aspects of gardening: from the method of skill leveling to finding very rare plants.

Gardening skill can be pumped in several ways:

1. Study books by skill, which can be purchased through the bookcase (the "Buy Books" option).

  • Gardening. Volume 1. Water, Light and Mud
  • Gardening. Volume 2. The gardener and gardening
  • Gardening. Volume 3. Strange and forbidden plant genetics

Please note that you can only upgrade a skill with books up to level 9. For maximum results, practice is essential.

2. Directly take care of plants in the garden (watering, harvesting, fertilizing, weeding, etc.). You can pump over both at home and at public lots when harvesting.

Note: as soon as your Sim starts gardening, they will automatically gain skill level 1, as in Sims 4 all skills lack level 0.

If you want to start gardening, you first need vegetables and fruits for planting. They can be bought through a computer (option "Order" - "Buy seeds") or through garden pots and flower beds directly, and after the release of patch 1.44.77 (dated 06/19/2018) there are packages with seeds just in the purchase mode in the "Hobbies" section and skills "-" Active rest ". But that's not the only way to get plants - from time to time you can find them while fishing and traveling in space, just harvest plants and trees all over the area, or buy them at some stalls.

To plant a plant, drag it from your Sim's inventory to the ground or garden pot, then click on it and select the Plant option. The planted plants can be placed both outdoors and indoors. The pot contains 1 mycelium, 1 bush or 1 tree, but in the flowerbed you can plant 1 tree, 4 bushes or 4 sprouts with mushrooms.

Sims who have reached Gardening Level 7 can buy farm vegetables and fruits. They differ from conventional kits in that they yield more of the same seeds present in starter kits with seeds.
To open purchased seeds, click on them in your inventory or on the ground and unpack them. Their contents will automatically be added to your inventory. By the way, the number of fruits in packages may be different, for example, in some the same fruit may be repeated 2 times, and in others it may be absent altogether.

Gardening skill levels

As the skill develops, new interactions and opportunities will become available to you. Let's take a closer look at them.

1st level - Sims can plant, water, weed, spray beetles and harvest.
2nd level - the character can study gardening through the computer (option "Network" - "Research" - "Study gardening") and, thus, set himself up for attentiveness. He also has the opportunity to study individual plants in order to open information about them in the diary. Several plants growing nearby can be watered at once. Once every few days, Sims can use the Promote Growth (formerly Grow) option on the plant to improve their quality. Due to the growth, the yield on such plants will be of higher quality and higher in price.
Level 3 - You can now fertilize plants to help them grow faster. As fertilizer, you can use grass, flowers, vegetables, fruits, mushrooms and fish that you have in your inventory.
4th level - Sims can "Talk to Plant" to increase their social bar. And also harvest from plants growing nearby. Spring and Fall Seed Packages are now available (with the Sims 4 Seasons DLC)
Level 5 - now the character will be able to "Take a shoot" (cut off a sprout from a plant), "Graft" (cross a taken sprout with another plant). Summer and Winter Seed Packages are now available (with the Sims 4 Seasons DLC)
6 level - other sims can praise your gardener's garden. Your Sim can weed over a large area with one command.
7 level - Sims can spray bug repellent over a wide area. In addition, farm seeds and seeds of unusual plants become available to them.
Level 8 - the choice of cutting the Bonsai tree becomes available. The interaction "Bulk sale" appears for trading in crops from all plants at once over a large area. And also the option “Re-grow foliage” for 50§ for pruned Bonsai trees to change their shape, as well as “Bring the plant back to life” for 100§ if it is dead (the plant will return to the seedling stage).
9th level - characters will be able to "Take care of the garden" (the sim automatically watering and weeding all the plants in the garden).
Level 10 - Packages of rare plants seeds become available.

The quality of plants, their condition and yield

All plants in The Sims 4 have 3 states (moods): bad, neutral, and excellent.

Keeping plants in good spirits is important to improve their quality. In order to maintain the garden in this form, it is enough to do periodic weeding and watering or generally take care of the garden. But if you don't take care of the plants for more than 5 days, they will die.

Apart from the mood, there is also the quality of the plants. It directly depends on how long the garden is looked after and taken care of. At the beginning of gardening, you can see that most of the plants are in their normal state, but with the development of the skill and the use of the "Grow" function (in the new patches "Promote growth"), you can improve the quality of the plants. It takes a lot of effort, especially to achieve high results. To find out when the plant is ready for new growth, watch for the appearance of shimmering sparkles above its foliage.

There are 10 quality levels in total: Normal, Good, Very Good, Decent, Fine, Excellent, Excellent, Awesome, Flawless, and Perfect. The higher the quality of the plants, the higher both the quality of the harvested crop and its price will be.

In most cases, the overgrowth function is available every 4-5 days. If you have been able to achieve the ideal quality for your plants, their shoot can be used to graft onto lower quality plants for the perfect yield.

Depending on their species, plants yield a harvest every 2-4 days. From one bush, you can get up to 10 fruits at once. The longer you wait to harvest, the better your chances of fully benefiting from a given harvest cycle.

Changes in patch 1.44.77

Patch 1.44.77, released prior to The Sims 4 Seasons, introduced significant changes to the gardening system.

The pop-up descriptions of plants no longer show their "mood", but a scale of quality levels has appeared, the number of which has been reduced from 10 to 5 (normal, good, excellent, amazing, ideal). This optimization, however, had no effect on the total time to reach the maximum level, since one stage now requires the same amount as before - two.

Increasing the quality level with the help of the "Promote growth" action becomes possible when one of the divisions of the scale is filled, then the DNA spiral icon appears on it. At the same time, the Sim no longer needs to approach the plant for this. The plant upgrade animation has changed from bubbles to green ribbons.

In the daily care of the garden - watering, weeding, spraying - a lot has also been optimized. Sims can now be assigned actions that affect all plants in the area. The size of the area depends on the character's gardening skill level: from the plant itself to all the surrounding plants.

Now it is possible to sell crops directly from the seedlings, without first collecting it in the luggage. And from the 8th skill level, you can sell all ripe fruits at once. At the same time, information is available how much and what exactly you are selling and for what amount.

With the patch came a completely new interaction - "explore", available from level 2. Sims carefully examine and photograph the plant, and write down the results in a notebook. You can always get acquainted with them in the character's smartphone. Interestingly, when studying a hybrid plant, the sim collects data only about the mother plant - the one to which everyone else was grafted.

Seasons in horticulture

With the release of The Sims 4 Seasons add-on, plants in the game have a concept of seasonality. In its season, the plant blooms and bears fruit, and during the rest of the year it goes into hibernation. However, if you move the sprout under the roof - even in a greenhouse or house, even on a veranda or porch - then it will be in an active stage all year round. In its description, the status "In shelter" will appear, and it will ripen much slower.

You can plant seedlings at any time, just the sprouts will hatch only in their own season. You can find out which season is suitable for a given crop by hovering the mouse over a seedling or fruit in your baggage.

Crossing plants

At level 5, Sims can cut off plants and graft them onto others. This allows you to cross 2 different species with each other and get unique hybrid plants and their fruits.

Such vaccinations allow, first of all, to achieve high quality of the crop at a faster pace. For example, your Sim has grown the perfect chamomile bush and planted a normal-quality rose bush to plant it. Such a hybrid plant will produce an ideal yield for both roses and chamomile.

But besides this, crossing gives also special unique species of plants. At the same time, it does not matter what you vaccinate to, the result will be in both cases. The only thing I noticed was that shoots grafted from tree to bush grow and yield faster than shoots grafted from bush to tree. Most likely, the fact is that the tree and the bush have different periods of growth and maturation.

Obtaining unique plants by crossing:

  • Pomegranate + Orchid = Flower of Death
  • Snapdragon + Lily = Orchid
  • Strawberry + Daisy = Bonsai Shrub
  • Strawberry + Snapdragon = Pitaya (Dragon Fruit)
  • Snapdragon + Pitaya = Ruminant Berry (Cannibal Swallow)
  • Apple + Cherry = Pomegranate
  • Chrysanthemum + Tulip = Strelitzia
  • Sage + Basil = Parsley
  • Lemon + Pear = Vegetable Banana
  • Bell (Hyacinth) + Strawberry = Grapes

In addition to the above, there are several more features in crossbreeding that are worth remembering:
  1. Since one plant can give no more than 10 fruits per crop, then when crossing this amount is distributed among all species, which means that the more crosses on one plant, the less fruit for each species in the end. If there are more than 10 types of fruits on the bush, then for each harvest there will be a different ratio of species and their number.
  2. In The Sims 4, there are plants from which you cannot take shoots and to which grafting is not applicable - these are mushrooms, Bonsai shrubs and Swallow Cannibalism.
  3. If you cut too many shoots from one plant, it will eventually die. In total, no more than 2-4 cuttings can be taken from one garden bed, depending on the quality and condition of the plant.
  4. Up to 17 different species can be mixed on one plant. Any attempt to graft a sprout after the reached number will result in the last grafted species in the list being replaced by the current one. But the replaced plant species will only disappear from the list when you hover over them, while harvesting they can still be harvested.
  5. If you take a shoot from a crossed plant, it will contain only the very first plant species indicated in the cross list, and not all species at once. When crossing such a shoot with other bushes, you will get the usual result (1 species will be added).

Trash plants

Perhaps the strangest and most unique plant in The Sims 4 is the trash plant. If you leave a pile of rubbish on the ground for 24 hours (only in your home area), then after that it will turn into a garden bed (the "Water" option will appear), on which a green bush will subsequently grow, giving garbage (fruits that look like small tied trash packages).

Such a plant requires the same care as everyone else, but does not provide any benefits or benefits. On the contrary, these shrubs cause a negative "Unpleasant Environment" moodlet in Sims, attract flies and can negatively affect the plants in the garden (infecting beetles and worsening their condition).

Bonsai tree

There are 2 types of Bonsai tree in the game: one of them can be bought in the shopping mode for 425 simoleons, the second can be grown independently from Bonsai buds. When the grown shrub grows up and you bring its quality to excellent, you can unlock the "Convert into an ornamental plant (25§)" option.
Note: Please note that if the quality of the shrub is worse or better than excellent, then the option will not be available.

Up to level 4 of gardening, Sims will cut their Bonsai with a random haircut (the "Shape" option), and starting from the 5th level, you can choose the type of haircut yourself (the "Shape" option). A trimmed Bonsai tree gives a variety of mood moodlets from the foliage grooming process and different types of haircuts. To learn more about Bonsai Moodlets, see The Sims 4 Moodlets - Part 2.

Ruminant (Swallow the Cannibal)

It is impossible to ignore the already familiar to us from past games Swallow Cannibalism, now referred to as the Ruminant plant. Many of its functions have remained unchanged. For example, when Swallow is hungry, she lures the Sims with a piece of cake, if the Sim tries to eat the cake, the plant will swallow it and spit it out, after which it will be possible to milk the cow and get unique elixirs. But, as in the previous parts of the game, the Ruminant Plant does not eat children, so if the children are playing with the monster, you should not worry.

Now Swallow gives us new nice features. Depending on the mood of the Sim that was swallowed by the Ruminant Plant, we can get the appropriate elixirs: an extract of happiness, embarrassment, romance, anger, a stunned state (from the emotion of tension), playfulness, sadness, boredom, attentiveness, inspiration, cheerfulness and confidence. All these elixirs give corresponding emotions after drinking. If the plant swallows a Sim again, then this character will be eaten to death, after which the extract of life can be obtained. It resets the current age stage to the beginning and instantly makes the character happy.

If you do not feed the Swallow Cannibal within 12 hours after the appearance of the cake, then she dies and leaves a skeleton that can no longer be brought back to life. These remains can be used as decor as they give 2 points for a playful setting.

Fruit and Spring Challenge by Jasmine Holiday

Fructon appeared in the game with update 1.16.61 during the 2016 Spring Challenge. You can distinguish this fruit tree by the soft glow of the crown.

You could buy fruit tree seeds from the coordinator Jasmine Holiday, who during the trial appeared in the public gardens of Oasis Springs and Willow Creek, or wait for the harvest and collect fruits from the trees that appeared in Silvan Glade.

For 20 fruits donated by Jasmine, a new garden pot "Fructon" was unlocked in the game, and for a fruit of perfect quality, a pot "Ideal Fructon" was added. After installing patch 1.17.7 (end of the trial), Jasmine disappears from the city, as well as fruit trees in Silvan Glade, but after installing patch 1.44.77, fruitton returns in a bag with rare seeds.

Coniferous fast growing plants

Evergreen fast growing plants are appropriate in any area. They are durable and create an aristocratic appearance.

Magic spruce

Among the various species of this plant, the slender European spruce is distinguished by the rapidity of development. Its features are:

  • cone-shaped crown with drooping-outstretched branches
  • height up to 30 (less often -50) m
  • oblong cones appear from the second year of life and are up to 15 cm long and up to 4 cm wide.

This spruce differs in frost resistance. But her root system is superficial, which should be taken into account when choosing a location on the site.

Lush pine

There are different types. Tall trees can reach 40 m. Pine requires a separate place, does not get along well in group plantings. These trees are also demanding on the composition of the air, they do not tolerate windy weather. But they are not afraid of frost.

Stylish and fragrant fir

The cylindrical crown distinguishes it from spruce. Fir can grow in the shade for 700 years. Reaches a height of up to 60 m. But demanding on growing conditions: does not like frost, wind and heat with drought. Some varieties give off a pleasant aroma that wafts around. It is this tree that is decorated for the New Year.

Juniper Blue Arrow

For a year, it gains up to 15 cm, and in total it grows up to 3 m. The branches of a rocky juniper envelop the tree from the very bottom, without losing brightness and splendor over time. Therefore, this variety has become ideal for hedge formation and zoning.
