Learn More About Meilland Roses
By: Stan V. Griep, American Rose Society Consulting Master Rosarian, Rocky Mountain District
Meilland rose bushes come from France and a rose hybridizing program that dates back to the mid 1800’s. Looking back at those involved and their beginnings with roses over the years, there have been some truly amazingly beautiful rose bushes produced, but none quite so popular and well known here in the United States of America as the rose named Peace.
She came so close to not ever coming to be, as she was hybridized at the time of the World War II conflict. What many folks do not know is that Peace was named Mme A. Meilland in France, Gloria Dei in Germany and Gioia in Italy. It has been estimated that more than 50 million of the roses we know as Peace have been planted all over the world. Her history and her beauty are but two reasons why this wonderful rose bush holds a special place in my rose beds. To see her blooms all lit up with the morning sun is truly a glorious site to behold.
The History of Meilland Roses
The Meilland family tree is truly an amazing family history to read about. The love of roses is deeply entrenched therein and makes for some truly facinating reading. I highly recommend that you read more about the Meilland family, their tree roses, rose bushes and the rich history.
Owner of the first patent ever granted for a plant in Europe with “Rouge Meilland ® Var. Rim 1020” in 1948, Francis Meilland devoted a great part of his life to Plant Breeders’ Rights and to set up legislation of intellectual property to rose-tree, as it is in force today.
Over the past several years, Meilland roses has introduced their Romantica line of rose bushes. These rose bushes have been brought forth to compete with the David Austin English Rose bushes. A few of the truly wonderful rose bushes from this line are named:
- Classic Woman – a creamy white to pure white bloomer with big full blooms
- Colette – a pink blooming climbing rose with excellent fragrance and very hardy
- Yves Piaget – features large very double mauve pink blooms with a fragrance that will fill the garden
- Orchid Romance – a medium pink bloomer with undertones of lavender, makes the heart beat just a bit faster seeing her blooms
Types of Meilland Roses
Some other rose bushes that the Meilland rose folks have brought forth for our enjoyment over the years include the following rose bushes:
- All-American Magic Rose – Grandiflora rose
- Carefree Wonder Rose – Shrub rose
- Cocktail Rose – Shrub rose
- Cherry Parfait Rose – Grandiflora rose
- Clair Matin Rose – Climbing rose
- Starina Rose – Miniature rose
- Scarlet Knight Rose – Grandiflora rose
