Gates made of corrugated board: how to do it yourself

In modern suburban construction, corrugated board is very popular as a material for sheathing fences and for making entrance gates. And if you already have a fence made of corrugated board, then you shouldn't even think about what material the gate will be made of, besides, you can make them yourself, while saving money, unlike ordering in specialized firms.


Types of corrugated board

There are different types of corrugated board. There is an ordinary profiled sheet - galvanized, there is a colored one - with a layer of polymer applied over the zinc coating. The polymer coating has a double role - it protects from external influences and gives the material a more decorative appearance. Simple galvanized corrugated board is used as a roofing material mainly in temporary buildings, the colored one has quite a solid appearance, it can be seen on the roofs of residential buildings and courtyard buildings.

Decking is made from sheet metal of different thicknesses. The thinnest ones are designed for wall decoration, but can fit on the roof with frequent lathing and light snow loads. Sheets of this group are marked with the letter "C".

The thickest metal is used to make a material with increased bearing capacity. It is marked with the letter "H" and is used as a roofing material in areas with increased wind or snow load. There is also a universal professional sheet - it is designated "NS". It can be used both for walls and for roofing (the amount of snow should be medium).

After the letter coding of the profiled sheet, there are numbers: C8, H35, HC20. They indicate the height of the wave in millimeters that is formed in a given material. In the example, these are 8 mm, 35 mm, 20 mm, respectively. A corrugated board with a wave height of at least 20 mm is laid on the roof.

The waveform of the bearing metal profile is often more complex - additional grooves are added to it to increase rigidity.

By type of coverage

With all the external similarity, the price of a corrugated board of the same type may differ significantly. The point is, most often, not in the impudence of the manufacturer or seller, but in different technologies and materials that are used in production. For example, the protective coating can be zinc and aluzinc. The second type of protection appeared recently, the equipment is expensive, but the durability of the metal coated with aluzinc is much higher.

Also, the method of wave formation affects the durability of the coating. There are two technologies - cold rolling and emulsion. In cold rolling, the sheet is simply pushed by rollers without any preparation. Expensive equipment is required to prevent damage to the previously applied coating. Accordingly, the profiled sheet of cold rolling is more expensive.

Colored corrugated board has many layers

When a wave is formed with an emulsion, the metal surface is moistened with a liquid (oil, water, special liquid) and then sent under the rolls. If, after rolling, such a sheet is not dried, but sent to the firing oven - to fix the paint, then the places that were wet will quickly begin to rust. It is impossible to see this defect in advance; one has to hope that the technology is not violated. But the profiled sheet made using this technology is cheaper.

There are also different polymer coatings. They create films of different thicknesses and densities, with different properties.

  • Polyester (glossy and matte). The profiled sheet with a polyester coating has a relatively low price (the cheapest of the colored ones) and good characteristics - the coating is plastic, it does not change its color for a long time. Matte polyester has no reflections on the surface, it looks like velvety. This is achieved with a different application technique and a thicker layer. This coating is the most resistant to mechanical damage.
  • Plastisol. Has increased resistance to aggressive environments, but does not tolerate ultraviolet light. Plastisol-coated corrugated roofing will quickly fade (two to three years).
  • Pural - polyamide and acrylic are added to polyurethane. The coating is more uniform, the service life without color change is from ten years. The disadvantage is the high price.
  • PVDF is a composition of polyvinyl fluoride and acrylic. The coating is expensive, but it lasts a long time even in an aggressive environment. This roofing material can be used on the seaside. Another great property of it is that it can clean itself. The slightest rain, and the roof made of corrugated board with PVDF coating shines like new.

Under normal conditions, the roof is made of corrugated board with a polyester coating. In terms of price and quality ratio, it is optimal.

- Often, while working at a summer cottage, especially after a long winter break, we get unexpected injuries. We are, of course, not talking about ligament ruptures or bone fractures. And they heal for a long time. Sometimes, even with minor stretching, fixation may be required. To fix and unload the damaged ligament or joint, it is necessary to use soft or semi-rigid orthoses. The brace is worn all day long and protects against further damage and swelling - an injured limb must be spared. If the leg is injured, then you need to walk as little as possible.

In case of bruises, to prevent the occurrence of edema and hematoma, immediately cool the damaged area. In addition, local anti-inflammatory drugs such as creams, gels and ointments help relieve pain and swelling in case of bruises, inflammation of the joints, sprains and muscle tension.

These funds contain in their composition a high concentration of an anti-inflammatory substance (most often diclofenac or ibuprofen), which, when applied, enters the damaged area without having side effects on the stomach, heart and blood vessels, like tablets. For example, Analgos cream, Karmolis, and also Aertal cream, which has a different active ingredient - aceclofenac, have proven themselves well. It easily penetrates the inflamed tissue and has an analgesic and anti-edema effect.


Installation steps

All work on the manufacture and installation of this type of gate can be divided into working stages. However, you do not need to do some of these processes yourself - you can use help.

In order to determine the width of the gate, you need to know the dimensions of your car along with the mirrors, plus half a meter on each side. Most likely, in total, this parameter will turn out to be at least three meters, but, as a rule, they are made much more. The net width is determined by the distance from the inside of one support to the other, but this is not the size of the two leaves. There are also generally accepted parameters that you can focus on, although they are not required in execution:

  • most often the passage width is set from 3.5 to 5 m
  • the gate is adjusted to the width of the sheet, therefore, it can be from 1076 mm (MP-35) to 1200 mm (C-8).

Now let's talk about height. This parameter is most often determined by the length of the sheet and can vary from 2000 to 2500 mm in order not to make a cut (the cut edge can be corroded). But the flaps can be made with forging elements, as in the photo above, and then they will turn out taller if the panel is not cut.

Another factor affecting the height of the doors is the gap between them and the ground surface, and this is plus 100-300 mm (depending on the amount of precipitation in the region). This distance is necessary in winter, when ice or high snow cover is possible, and these natural phenomena will interfere with the normal functioning of the valves when they are opened and closed.

Before making a gate from corrugated board with your own hands, you should draw up drawings, diagrams or sketches - only in this way the structure can acquire real dimensions. That is, you measure the width of the passage (if the supports are installed) or set it yourself, then draw the frame on paper in accordance with the width and height of the corrugated board. So you can calculate all the gaps, the required number of profiles for the frame and the required number of sheets.

If you make only one sash, you will certainly save on the profile from which the frame frame is made (a hollow profile with a square or rectangular section). But on the other hand, this is a significant increase in the load on the hinges and, of course, on the bearing support. In addition, a lot of space will be needed to open such a passage. What can not be allowed on every personal plot.

In this case, for the manufacture of the frame, of course, you will need more materials - a metal profile and awnings. But when plowing, such a structure requires half the space and has a reduced load on the supports. Even in the list of advantages of double-leaf gates, one can indicate an increased resistance to wind loads, since there is less windage here.

What should be included in the scheme

When drawing up a sketch or drawing of a frame frame, it should include:

  • net width of the opening - it is calculated from one support to another along the inside
  • frame width of each sash
  • number and cross-section of support pillars
  • the structure of the frame frame, taking into account the section of the profile
  • location and size of the gate. The wicket built into the sash allows you to reduce the cost of supporting supports and does not require a separate sidewalk at the entrance to the courtyard. In this case, the configuration of the frame changes.
  • places where the hinges will be welded (top, bottom and possibly in the middle of the support post)
  • places where the lock will be mounted on the gate and wicket
  • space for an internal vertical and horizontal latch.

The wind load is different, but in some regions it is quite strong, but here, in fact, a ready-made sail. Therefore, the stronger the winds in your area, the more powerful the vertical and horizontal latches with the lock should be. Such bolts, as a rule, are made independently, using a smooth steel rod with a section of 14-16 mm and a pipe, the inner diameter of which (DU) is 1.5-2 mm larger than that of the rod.

As you know, a triangle is the only geometric figure where, with a rigid connection of the corners, backlash is impossible at all. The top image shows how the frame is reinforced with gussets, although instead of them, you can weld jumpers from a profile with a similar section of the frame. The main disadvantage of such a reinforcement is that it is effective for sashes no more than 1500 mm wide.

Pay attention to the photo above - there the corner is welded inside the frame and the very design of such a profile implies an increase in rigidity. But it does not have to be placed inside the frame - the corner can also be welded along the outer side of the perimeter - the rigidity will remain the same, but the appearance will change somewhat. The step between the profile clamps here should be 200-300 mm.

And finally, the third, most powerful option for increasing the rigidity of the frame:

a) each sash consists of two triangles and is supported by hinges. This design is more suitable for areas with low wind loads, since the corrugated board is mainly fixed only along the perimeter and the frame is weak

b) perhaps this is the most economical option, where the sheet can be screwed not only around the perimeter, but also across. The disadvantage here is the absence of triangles, but the jumper makes it possible for convenient installation of the lock and horizontal bolt

c) there is one serious drawback (not reinforced inner corners). In an area where strong winds often blow, frame deformation is possible

d) thanks to the jumper, the frame is formed from four triangles, which, of course, increases the rigidity. But this is not all - the sheet here can be fixed not only along the perimeter, but also in diameter, which will allow it to withstand large wind loads. The disadvantage is the lack of reinforcement of the inner corners.

e) there is no reinforcement of the two inner corners on each sash and in a strong wind this can lead to its deformation

f) the best of all options. Eight triangles on each leaf plus vertical and horizontal lintel. Reinforced places for inserting the lock and fixing awnings. The frame will not bend here even in a stormy wind.

  • professional sheet - it is better to stop at the wall option, since it has a lower wave and a greater width
  • self-tapping screws for corrugated board - they are selected by color
  • rivets - needed to fasten the sheets to each other
  • metal square profile 60 × 60 mm or a pipe of the same section for supports
  • 40 × 40 or 60 × 20 mm profile for frame assembly
  • profile 20 × 20 or 20 × 40 mm for reinforcement
  • smooth steel bar with a section of 14-16 mm and a pipe with DN 1.5-2 mm larger for gate valves (latches)
  • locks and hinges
  • decor (this is usually forging, but it is not necessary to use it)
  • cement, sand, crushed stone brick for the installation of supports.

Now let's figure out how to put the support pillars.The depth of the pit should be one third of the net length of the post, for example, for a profile of 300 cm, you will need a pit per meter deep. It is better to make it with a drill 120 mm in diameter (for a profile of 60 × 60 mm), since the shovel will break the whole pit and you will have to spend a lot of concrete.

First, a 15-20 cm sand-crushed stone pillow is poured, which not only serves as a seal, but also serves as a buffer against frost heaving of the soil. Also, through it there will be an outflow of water during precipitation. The support is covered with an anti-corrosion primer, painted and installed in the pit. In this case, you need to use a plumb line or a long level so that the post is strictly vertical.

After making sure of the clarity of the vertical, the support is concreted. After that, it is imperative to seal the cavity - decorative covers (sold in stores selling building materials) or metal plates that are welded over the hole are suitable here. In rare cases, concrete is also poured into the cavity.

Assembling the frame

Perhaps the assembly and installation of the frame is the most difficult and crucial moment in the manufacture of swing gates. Here, extreme accuracy is needed, so before cutting the blanks (profile), check the actual dimensions with the previously drawn sketch or drawing. Do not forget about the gaps between the supports and frames, as well as between the sashes. If it turns out a couple of millimeters less, then this is not scary - the gap will be blocked by a feigned bar, which can be welded at any time, but if it is more, then you have to cut the frame.

Corner joints of profiles are best done not "in the joint", but "on the mustache", that is, you cut the edge at an angle of 45⁰ - this allows you to clog the cavities. In addition, such a corner connection is stiffer than a straight one and it is not difficult to make it. Stiffening ribs are welded "in butt".

It is more convenient to start welding the hinges from the frame - step back from the bottom and top by 200 or 300 mm and grab the parts of the canopies with the cap. Then transfer these dimensions to the support, focusing from its upper part and weld the elements with pins, where the caps will be put on. If the gate will open only in one direction, then weld the halves with pins on the same side by overlapping. But in the case when there is a need for opening on two sides (inward and outward), then the pins are welded on the inside of the opening.

Before attaching the corrugated board, you should install all the accessories: locks, latches and latches - it's much easier this way, because the sheets will not interfere. Gate valves made of steel rods and pipes are fixed with electric welding, but locks and latches can be damaged with strong heating. Therefore, to fix them, holes are drilled and bolted - this is not even a requirement, but just a practical experience.

The corrugated board is fastened with an overlap by one wave, but if necessary, in order not to cut the sheet, 2-3 waves can be overlapped. If, nevertheless, there is a need to cut the material, then the edge should be sealed with epoxy to protect it from corrosion (the resin is transparent and can only be seen at a very close distance).

A self-drilling roofing screw cannot be forcibly screwed into a steel profile, and for this a hole is first made. The standard self-tapping screw is 4.8mm, so use a 3.8-4mm drill.
