How to grow an orchid from a cutting at home?
Substrate preparation and plant treatment
If the cutting is taken from the plant itself (meaning, dividing the plant's trunk into two parts - upper and lower), then the substrate is used the same as for an adult orchid... It is important that it is disinfected and also less water-consuming than usual. If sphagnum is present in the purchased substrate, then it, as well as all the dust, must be removed, leaving the largest pieces of bark.
In the event that a peduncle or its fragments are used as a cutting, then you can use calcined sand or scalded sphagnum.
Stem dividing procedure. Sterility of materials
For division, a rather large, elongated plant is selected, it must be an adult, at least 3 years old, with a sufficient number of leaves (at least 5) and roots.
Maintaining maximum cleanliness and sterility is essential both during work and all manipulations, and after planting the cuttings, during rooting.
For the procedure you will need the following materials and tools:
- plant with or without peduncle
- sharp short knife or scalpel
- crushed charcoal
- foundation or brilliant green
- stimulants (epin, root)
- perforated pot
You do not need to remove the orchid from the pot - this is not necessary. Wash it and dry it. Then, over a fire or alcohol, disinfect the knife. Choose the place of the cut so that there are leaves and roots on both divided parts. It is optimal that two leaves remain on the hemp, and three at the top... Make a neat cut, being careful not to damage the roots of the orchid.
Planting in a substrate and further care
It will be useful to process the upper half before planting. root... Plant it in an ordinary substrate in such a way that the cut does not touch it. If there was a peduncle on the orchid, you can not remove it. Place under the stump a piece of foam to avoid decay. Spray the young plant epin and place in a greenhouse.
Continue to care for the lower part as usual.... Reduce watering as the plant has been reduced by almost half. Soon, new babies will appear on the stump in the amount of 1-3 or more pieces. You can stimulate the emergence of sprouts by spraying the plant with epin.
In a greenhouse, an orchid needs bright diffused light for 12-14 hours a day. If the procedure was carried out in the winter, then supplement the plant with phytolamps. This is extremely important for the photosynthesis to proceed and for the steady growth of roots. Try to keep the temperature at least 22 ° C, optimally 23-26 ° C. Air the greenhouse in the evening for 15-20 minutes.
You can equip a greenhouse on your own from scrap materials, or buy a special one at the bazaar or in a large construction supermarket in the garden / vegetable garden department.
At home a greenhouse can even be made from a plastic bottle with a volume of 5-6 liters, a transparent box or a box from under a cake, or from a stretch film or oilcloth, even an ordinary bag can fit - the main thing is that it is transparent enough.
The frame can be made from stiff wire or wooden rods. An old aquarium with or without lighting can be an excellent basis for a greenhouse.
In general, the arrangement and size of the greenhouse will depend on how many plants you have and what result you are pursuing. In extreme cases, you can build a separate greenhouse for each cuttings, but then caring for them will be somewhat more complicated.
From the peduncle, planting and care features
For these purposes, they take faded, live peduncles:
- Separate it from the orchid and cut into pieces in such a way that on each cutting there were 1-2 dormant buds... If the peduncle is thin, weak or removed from a young orchid, then it may not be divided into parts
- Dry the cuttings within 24 hours, treat the cuts with cinnamon or crushed charcoal
- The cuttings are placed on the surface of moistened soil (vermiculite, calcined sand or scalded sphagnum are suitable) and placed in a greenhouse. It is important that the soil was moist, but not wet
- You can go the other way: a sleeping kidney can be lubricated with cytokinin paste and the peduncle can be lowered into a container of water (glass, bottle, etc.). Pour clean water and activated carbon on the bottom of the container. The water needs to be changed every 2-3 days.
- A greenhouse with cuttings is placed in a bright place, you need a bright, diffused light.
After the appearance of a couple of leaves, the growths can be fed by spraying with diluted fertilizers for orchids at a dose of ¼ of that indicated on the package. When the roots reach a length of more than 5 cm, the young orchid is planted in a small, perforated pot, in a substrate based on fine pine bark, like an adult plant. It will bloom in 2-4 years.
Violet RS Aquamarine
|Bred by:||Repkina S.|
|Socket description:||medium green foliage|
|Flower size:||large-flowered (4 cm)|
|Flower color:||The flowers have blue streaks and the outer petals are green.|
Description. Every year breeders bring out many new varieties of violets and they are all unique. To understand whether a new variety is needed in the collection, you need to read its description and still find a place for it on your windowsill.
The history of the variety. The "Aquamarine" variety was bred in Ukraine by the breeder S. Repkina. Therefore, PC is added to the name on tags and in catalogs. The variety was bred in 2007.
Leaves. The leaf plates are collected in a rosette that does not exceed 25 cm in size. The color of the leaves is medium green, the shape of the leaf resembles a heart with wavy edges.
Reproduction of violets
The easiest way to reproduce is by leaf cuttings. The best time is spring-summer. Propagation during flowering - I do not recommend it, it is better to wait until the violet fades. It is necessary to take medium-sized cuttings from an adult young flower that is not damaged. Make a cut at an angle of 45º. It is better to put the cut sheet in a dark container with boiled water. You can put a piece of activated carbon in the water. We do not change the water in the container, but add new water. The leaf takes root from 2 weeks to a month, it all depends on the variety. When the cutting has roots, it can be planted in the ground. I plant in disposable plastic cups first.
At the bottom - small expanded clay is necessary, and do not forget to make holes in the glass.
I love violets very much, I have been breeding them for more than 5 years. My husband gave me the first violet for my birthday, and now I already have more than 10 pots with these magnificent flowers. I never stop admiring them and I want to share with you my pride and joy) Violets I call - my princesses))) They decorate the room with their charm and splendor. Astrologers believe that the violet is Taurus according to the zodiac sign (it is very funny that my husband is also Taurus according to the horoscope, and it is evident that he chose such a flower as a gift for me))). This is a calm and unhurried sign. They have a calming effect on the atmosphere in the home. Violets are also considered a symbol of comfort and family happiness.
The official name of the violet is Saintpaulia or Usambara violet. In the 19th century, Baron Walter von Saint Paul discovered this flower near the Usambar Mountains in East Africa and brought it to Germany.

Growing and observing violets is a very interesting and exciting activity. If you don't have a violet yet, then I advise you to start and watch how a luxurious blooming beauty grows from a leaf.
Violets can bloom all year round. The main thing is to take care of them correctly. They love light, but are afraid of direct sunlight. It is better to place the flower on the east or west window. If you have southern windows, then you need to shade it. In order for the plant to develop evenly, the pot needs to be turned from time to time in different directions towards the light. The pots should be small but wide. In large pots, violets will not be comfortable.
The temperature should be at least + 16ºC. Doesn't like drafts. Violet loves high humidity, but I do not recommend spraying, it is better to put containers of water next to the pots. Fertilize from spring to late autumn. This is the key to a beautiful and long flowering.
Watering violets must be very careful - it is better to do this from a watering can with a thin spout, trying not to get on the leaves, otherwise they may start to rot. The best thing is tray watering. Water on average once a week, and in the heat 2 times. I take the land in flower shops, especially for violets. In a timely manner, you need to remove wilted flowers and cut off the spoiled leaves at the root.
