Methods of protecting fruit tree trunks

by Antonino Crapanzano

In this new article we see how you can do the protection of fruit tree trunks.

As we know, in fact, fruit trees are often subject to attacks by fungal pathogens and parasite infestations that can cause the appearance of diseases.

For this reason, we often have to resort to targeted practices and treatments that allow us to reap good benefits.

The methods for defend i trunks of fruit trees and consequently the whole tree against the attacks of insects, fungi and various parasites are different and we can implement them in the ways that we will see in this article.

Below you can find other articles explaining how to defend fruit trees and trunks:

  • hydrated lime for fruit trees;
  • whitewashing of logs;
  • lime with olive trees.

Methods for protecting fruit tree trunks

Let's see what are the methods we can put in place for defend i trunks of ours fruit trees.

The main practices we can put in place to accomplish our goals are:

  • cleaning the tree and the ground;
  • the application of fungicidal and insecticidal products such as white oil, hydrated lime and mineral fungicides;
  • the application of Bordeaux mixture.

Cleaning the tree and the ground

First of all, we must clean the tree and the ground to destroy the winter shelters of the parasites and eliminate eggs, larvae and spores that are found on the trunks, branches and in the ground.

During the autumn season we can remove the leaves and fruits that have fallen to the ground and eliminate those still attached to the branches.

In the winter season, however, it is advisable to clean the trunks and larger branches to eliminate the moss and lichens that constitute a refuge for parasites.

This operation for the protection of fruit tree trunks we can do it with a wire brush, taking care not to excessively scrape the bark.

The application of white oil

L'white oil or mineral oil like paraffin it is a biodegradable substance whose use is authorized in organic farming.

This compound is used to ward off parasites such as red spider, the mealybugs, the aphids, the mites and the larvae or caterpillars. L'white oil it wraps, as in a film, the eggs and the larvae that no longer breathe and suffocate.

This product is sold in concentrated form, it will then be diluted in water and sprayed on the trunk and branches, preferably during the winter period.

Mineral fungicides for the protection of fruit tree trunks

Between mineral fungicides most common and allowed in biological agriculture we can use the copper and it sulfur.

It is advisable to use these products to prevent the onset of the disease or in any case at the beginning of the same. Before carrying out the treatment, it is advisable to make sure that no rain is forecast for the following 48 hours.

Lime hydrates

There hydrated lime represents a valid alternative for the protection of fruit tree trunks from parasitic insects such as psylla, mealybugs, aphids, hornbill larvae and diseases such as blister, candidiasis and scab.

In addition, the application of hydrated lime on the logs allows protect the latter from the intense heat of the summer season.

After application, in fact, the white surface of the trunk will have a greater reflective capacity, this allows the trunk to remain cool even in situations of extreme heat.

We recommend applying hydrated lime in the months of February and March, up to the month of April at the latest.

This method is allowed in organic farming as it is minimally invasive, natural and non-polluting.

How to prepare hydrated lime for the protection of fruit tree trunks?

There hydrated lime or calcium hydroxide is made up of a mixture of water and calcium oxide, also called quicklime.

To get the hydrated lime about 2-3 kg of lime will be needed for 10 l of water.

After combining the lime and water, we will have to mix them to obtain a united and fluid mixture that will be similar to milk in both consistency and color.

After we have the mixture, we move it to a hand pump and we can start spraying it lime on branches and trunks paying attention to avoid flowers and buds which, in contact with this substance, could die.

We need to know that the hydrated lime for the protection of fruit tree trunks it is not very soluble in water, so we will have to add small quantities.

The Bordeaux mixture

Widely used in organic farming, the Bordeaux mixture is a compound made up of copper is lime.

It is very efficient for the protection of fruit tree trunks against various diseases such as downy mildew, scab, plum, quince and pear moniliasis but also peach blister and apple powdery mildew.

We recommend applying Bordeaux mixture when the leaves begin to fall, in winter and at the beginning of the flowering period.

Here you will find more information regarding the Bordeaux mixture: what it is, what it is used for and how you can prepare it at home.

Males and females have significant differences in appearance.

Male butterflies have short thin antennae and wings, the range of which is up to 3 cm. The complex-colored front wings are gray-brown with dots, are crossed on wavy dark-colored stripes. The back is lighter, yellowish in color.

In females of winter moth, the structure is different: it is possible to recognize the butterfly of this species by a swollen abdomen and short wings, the length of which does not exceed 3 mm. They have 1-2 transverse bands. The underdevelopment of the wings does not allow the females to fly. Bull of gray-brown color, length - about 1 cm. Antennae, unlike the male, the butterfly is long.

Female winter moth

The eggs are small, oblong in shape, covered with a thick shell. When the female lays only eggs, they have a greenish color, and after a while they turn red-brown, imperceptible against the background of the bark of trees.

Caterpillars with 5 pairs of legs (3 front, 2 rear) hatch from the eggs. The caterpillar's head is yellow or light brown, and the body is greenish-yellow. In the center of the back there is a dark stripe, and on the sides there are 3 lights. The length of the body is about 230mm.

The pupa is brownish in color, small bifurcated spines can be observed at the end of its abdomen.

What does a winter moth breathe? Butterflies and caterpillars do this with the help of the trachea. On the sides of the corpse there are holes (stigmas, spiracles) into which the air enters. On each side there are 9 pieces, the total is 18. The first pair is located on the 1 thoracic ring, the others are evenly distributed on the abdominal rings.

At the edges of the stigmas are hairs that protect the respiratory organs of the winter moth from dust and other objects.

Many gardeners prefer to use their own proven recipes. Components and their number in the paint composition can vary depending on the needs. In desyatilitrovom bucket of water to dilute two or two and a half kg of lime pound of copper sulfate. To increase the strength of clay, glue, carpenter's glue or PVA is mixed into the solution (a bucket of water needed approximately kg). If the garden is plagued by rodent antics, the mixture can add a tablespoon of carbolic acid, the smell that neither the mouse nor rabbits can tolerate.

The resulting mass is thoroughly mixed and left for several hours to infuse, after which the solution will achieve a good consistency and could be applied easily.

Reasons to protect new trees from deer

Watching wildlife is a peaceful and sentient activity. Deer are especially wonderful to see in the woods and fields, but once they're in your yard, the gloves come off. Deer tree protection is needed for many tree varieties, as well as for newly planted babies up to a few years old.

Deer have their own preferences for gnawing, but the young bark is particularly attractive for its flavor and tenderness. The worst damage is done by males rubbing their horns against the bark to remove the velvet. Deer also claw the ground and dig up the roots, damage the base of the small tree, and can even unearth newly planted trees.

Protecting newly planted trees from deer in endangered areas is necessary for their continued health and growth. So how can I protect baby trees from deer? This question has likely been asked since humans started planting and farming became a way of life. The first step is to ascertain with certainty who is to blame for the damaged trees. If you actually see deer with your own eyes, you will know - but they are shy creatures and may not be noticeable when people are around.

Rabbits and other rodents also inflict some damage on young trees. Searching for deer leaves jagged edges on the bark and lower branches. They have oval droppings and the damage will be higher on the plant than the rodent damage.

Methods of protection of apples from hares, how to protect your garden

Damage to the bark of fruit trees with rodents leads to a decrease or disappearance of the next crop and even the death of a plant left unprotected.

How and from what to make fences

The most effective way to explain how to protect seedlings from hares is to install barriers.

A strong and durable fence of brick, stone, mesh nets will become a sufficient barrier for hares.

At the same time, sectional fences, fences from boards with large gaps, animals will easily overcome.

In this case, a fine-meshed metal grid is used to cover the most problematic areas of the main fence.

If the garden is large enough, then the most valuable varieties of apple trees are wrapped around this web. The height of the fences from the mesh - from From 100 to 130 cm, in the depth should be buried 30 cm.

Than to wrap the trees against the hares

For a long time, gardeners have tried various methods of understanding how to deal with hares in the garden.

There is an old proven method, which is still used today due to its accessibility - tying tree trunks with spruce branches.

It is better to make several layers, placing the billet so that the needles face down.

The winding of the rod with any material should be carried out in accordance with the main rule - the material must allow the passage of air.

Additionally, the spring needs time to remove the coil to prevent barrel overheating and extreme temperatures, which can lead to cracking of the bark.

As a wrapping, we use burlap, for example, from sugar.
You can also use old kapron tights, parchment paper.

If there is access to the river, then it is advisable to cover the trunk with reeds, its hares do not like it.

Treatment of apple trees by chemical means

In the fight against raids, rabbits use chemical means. Information about this method will help you find out how to scare hares out of the garden.

When asked how to prepare apple trees for winter, gardeners recall a lime that can be successfully used as a chemical protection against hares.

The composition of such a special lime includes copper sulfate, and it is not washed off by precipitation.

A natural remedy that repels rabbits, this is black ground pepper. With its help, borders are created around the most attractive young plants.

However, by spilling pepper on your site, you make sure your pets don't have access to it.

In the shops you can find special chemical repellents, which are sprayed around the trees. But, like black pepper, the repellent is easily washed off by rain, so its action can be extended by constantly updating the applied layer of the chemical.

Pernospora, rust, powdery mildew and scab

To protect fruit trees cntro pernospora, rust and powdery mildew, it is necessary to carry out some treatments based on sulfur. These diseases are caused by fungi that are widespread in the most humid environments and cause a general deterioration of the plant and conspicuous damage to the foliage. Damage to flowers and leaves also causes scab, to be exact, round dark spots, which quickly necrotize. Since the spores proliferate in the winter on fallen leaves, the best prevention is the constant cleaning of the soil. Copper-based treatments before flowering can be extremely effective in fighting these diseases.
