Tagghjate: enhancement of cultural and environmental heritage

The tagghjate

Proposal for an intervention project for the tourist enhancement-promotion of the cultural and environmental asset consisting of the complex of disused tuff quarries called with the dialectal term of "Tagghjate", located in the territory of San Giorgio Jonico (Taranto), downstream of the western slope of the mountain Belvedere extending along the SP nr. 109 San Giorgio Jonico-Pulsano.

The suggestion
"Night at the Tagghjate"- this is the name (3) of the project promotion initiative that we are about to propose here. But to do this we need an effective, concrete act of trust, even the minimum possible effort characterized by a sure guarantee fall on the territory in terms of tourism-economic-social-cultural-environmental development.

Let us now pause here, for a moment, on some considerations about the specific content of the valueTagghjate.

We know the Tagghjate (Aesthetic-formal reading)
"In our discourse (...) the landscape 'is the space that is built as an object of experience; and as a subject of judgment. (...) The landscape problem has recently shifted the focus; we have passed from the landscape as a feeling or like moods, to the landscape as a science and as a conscience of the post-modern "(4).
We want to emotionally participate and make known, directly in situs, the identity values of a territorial reality that has profoundly shaped the space of history and social life of the local man in a condition of continuous relationship of strength with the most immediate needs of the lived. newspaper of the then rural village reality.

The Tagghjateunlike the quarries of the same type located in other territories, provincial and regional, they are characterized by the following specific characteristics.

Tagghjate: Collapses (detail

External and contextual structurea) The landscape
They have a linear course. Extending downstream of Monte Belvedere, they necessarily resume the relative structural-formal characteristic with an almost zero visual impact while their "internal" jealously conceals parallel paths then richly articulating in a labyrinthine system of transversal interconnections.

Tagghjate: Ntàcche (detail)

The "fronts" (the excavated surfaces) lie down on the hillside - the one that looks at sunset towards Taranto - in a "stepped" succession, almost "discreetly" joining the progressive rhythm of the overlying altimetric value, following the natural gentle modulation of the demarcation of the horizon . A cadence, this, which reverberates further in the overhanging pace of the village block with white cubic masses - much more showy in the past. Today, even in the presence of a strong reality consisting of new buildings and building materials with a significant visual impact, try to observe the landscape from the nearby Contrada Baronia front (SP 110) - the crossroads that unites the industrial area of the town to that di Faggiano and the subsequent grafting with the aforementioned provincial Sangiorgio-Pulsano.Expressive-formal values
The rich and complex tonal range of the surfaces of the step-fronts generated by their different display orientation to the natural light source and by the bold plastic-volumetric movement supported by the material qualities of the rock as well as by the connotations of hue (range of browns and ochres) of the washing deposits of the overlying humus gives the image of the landscape a strong unitary pictorial-compositional note which is enhanced in the early hours of the afternoon and at sunset, but, in particular, in the summer noon. The natural table
Of immediate corollary, likewise, is the complementary palette of spontaneous background vegetation in its infinite seasonal variations (golden yellow, blister green / cinnabar, therefore, browns) and in the inevitable iridescent maximum luminous parties, all modeled in a sweet reclining on the wide spaces of the mantle. hilly. The presence of twigs and shrubs typical of the Mediterranean maquis mark here and there a natural rhythm of life.

The anthropogenic evidence
The residual crops (almond groves, fig groves, olive groves but also ficomoresco fences) connote the presence of a yesterday without a today, an impression, further supported by the dry wall boundaries and the timid presence of farm ruins now on a prominence of the ground now vaguely emerging between branch screens. And again, work terraces, here and there bare patches of red earth, rocks and inevitable stony ground but also the latest movements of contemporary man.Internal structure

b) Transcript and imaginary

They present a filmic scenario, a real dacanyon path. In the project proposal, one of the original main sheep tracks of work, the one subject to the intervention itself, on occasion unfolds in a short distance away various significant significant presences - caves, wells, residual wall complexes that with their various unpredictable sustained glimpses, volumes and plastic-chiaroscuro movements, now in grazing light, now direct, now in a sudden gloomy absence of the light source, inevitably refer to a spontaneous healthy individual imagination no less evocative than the best Hollywood stage machinations. An imaginary that becomes charged with an immediate need of the viewer to seek within himself an intimate moment of interspersing, of pause, of reflection: an unavoidable need-desire for knowledge, a deepening of what the immediate perceptual datum registers.

The tagghjate: Linography

The image of space
The "path" often subjects the observer to an unconscious different fruition of the spatial image; the continuous shifting of the "point of view" that unexpectedly passes from the usual situation to a view from above, then from below and askew, offers in a brief perceptive experience a multiple reality, yet so unitarily coherent in the space-time dimension demanding, once again, the need for a cognitive reorganization, to sustain a strong imaginative connotation (an unusual experience of spatial sensitivity that refers directly to an inevitable internalized expression of value judgment).
A constancy of spatial-directional clue is also present in the gradient of parallel horizontal metric-cadenced linear markings that affect all the walls while these continually pass from bright luminosity to deep and disturbing shadows and then promptly reshape into the different terxtures signics of the traces of excavation of the omnipresentric rhythmicity of the pickaxe (zzuèccu) in its different date, now frontal, oral-lateral right or left, with the vòcca crànne or with the piccènna.
Here too, but in a more marked way, the inevitable and highly articulated warm connotations of themselves paint the white whiteness of the tufaceous surface according to the different insistence of the continuous washings of the humus above the hills. The connotative signature
The visual data joins the daring and variegated technical-constructive highlights that can be appreciated among gorges, sudden readings of dates, names, phrases echoing an underlying sense of "valetìa", of presence, of indelible testimony of the hard being there. The semantic translation and extraneousness
We are continually caught in a semantic shift that promptly asks, of necessity, to be known; space in negative and space saved coexist in their incessant dialectical-formal alternation; technical-static-plastic devices (wall buttresses) and small dry stone walls to contain improbable friable materials and, again, here and there, the inevitable ntàcche - parallel quadrangular holes, ergonomically timed, to aid in a possible climbing work on the bare and bristling walls. But, also, the presence of real stairs dug directly into the rock as an aid to the occasional opportunities for an easier ascent / descent footprint, for example, from a quarry-hypogeum (caves: "1950" is"Chiàpparo”).Of the reappropriations of nature
Today nature has resumed compositional constellations with the presence of unpredictable varieties of essences typical of the Mediterranean scrub (cistus, myrtle, thyme, wild oregano) and spontaneously rooting tree species (wild fig, perastro, olive, carob); a touch, this, often hidden and integrated in a surprisingly indestructible union, as if to remind us that it - nature - still exists, is still there, all present, with its irrepressible desire to live. detect the unusual coalescence of a tree that from the bottom of an underground quarry (Grotta: Chiàpparo) takes the way for the original single excavation opening of the vault: the description that can be made of it in appreciating the different succession of seasonal recurrences is unimaginable.Vegetable and landscape chromatism
The variegated chromatic range of the "stain", especially in its earthy-gray shades (silver-gray, gray-green, red ocher, even the presence of yellow or carmine red or vermilion phosphorescence-floral flowers), further enriches the landscape palette.
